Vintage Schwinn Bike Speedometer 2½ Round Huret Bicycle Speedo Head 08 430 Nos

  

Is a gorgeous New Old Stock example of a relatively rare Schwinn accessory: a round-dial Schwinn Approved speedometer by Huret of France, part number 08 430, which appeared for only four years in the Schwinn catalog, from 1969 to 1972. Unlike the much more common chrome rectangular Schwinn Approved speedometers that Huret made all the way from the late 1960s into the early 1990s, this style was seen (in either Schwinn Approved or Sting-Ray form) for four years only, and was gone by 1973. My completely unscientific guess is that this round, white-dial design was intended to replace the similar round, white-dial, plastic-bodied Stewart Warner-built Schwinn speedometer, which was phased out after 1970.

It's compatible with the same drive hubs and drive cables used on all the other Huret-made Schwinn Approved or Sting-Ray speedometers. See my other auctions for some examples of those.

The speedometer head is 2½" in diameter and 1½" deep (plus the drive cable connection in back). It has a polished chrome rim, glass face, and painted steel housing, with red numbers on a white dial with a black pointer. To find one of these round models at all is nice; to find one in this condition is even better. This has been disassembled, cleaned, lubed and rebuilt. Its painted case has been refinished in the original silver gray Hammertone textured finish, and its glass lens was cleaned on both sides.

Dial coloring is very good. Both the bezel and the chrome handlebar clamp have been polished and waxed. It has had a complete going-over, and is all ready to go into service. There is no accumulated mileage; it's just passing 0000. Schwinn Approved/Huret Speedometer Head, Schwinn 08 460 (Rebuilt; bench-tested, zero miles).
