1966 1/2 SCHWINN STING-RAY 3 SPEED BICYCLE. When was the last time that you saw an original survivor in this condition? Not only is this bike in amazing condition, this is the first year for the Sting-Ray to come with the 3 speed Stik Shifter. Schwinn started sending these to their dealers in August 1966 to coincide with the 1966 Christmas season and this particular bike has a date code of JBXXXXX which makes this a September 1966 model. They referred to it as a 1966 1/2 model which makes this one even more rare.

As you can see from the photos below the bike is in immaculate original condition. Upon performing the cleaning and detail of the bike I replaced the following parts... Both brake cables and housings, front brake arm (original was bent), shifter cable, linkage and cap, sissy bar end caps and rear inner tube. I kept all of the original parts and they will be included with the bike.

The bike even still had the original Schwinn inner tubes! The new shifter cable was about an 1/8 of an inch shorter than the original and therefore I was unable to get the hub to shift into all three gears with the newer cable. I had no plans to ride this bike so I just installed it for aesthetics. If you did plan to ride this bike you should probably install the old cable, new tires and brake pads. As with all bikes of this age, there are some defects which I tried to show in the photos below. There are scratches in the paint and chrome, the rear slik tire has a split on the tread area and the seat has a very small split under the front bottom edge.

The silver paint on the number "3" on the shifter knob is flaking off. I'm pointing all of this out so that there no confusion on the condition of the bike.

Overall the bike is in fantastic original condition and you'd be hard pressed to find a boys bike from this era in as nice of shape as this one. Don't miss this chance to own a beautiful rare Sting-Ray!! I will also include the original June 1966 issue of " The Schwinn Reporter " newsletter which feature this bike on the front page. This is the newsletter that Schwinn sent to all of its dealers to inform them of new products being released.

The bike will be partially disassembled and carefully packaged using a bike box, foam pipe insulators and zip ties to insure that there is no damage in transit.
